brief feeders that the state citrus crop could take a hit there. >> you can track the weather conditions any time on wjla.com. >> what started out as a call to 9114 fire is now homicide investigation. crews were called to an apartment on waterside you drive this morning in rested. inside they found a body. >> we learned late today that fairfax police are looking into this as a homicide because the victim suffered upper body trauma. there's no specifics as to what that means. this is still an active crime scene. as for who is responsible police say they are looking into plenty of leads, but still no suspects. people in reston like that very

little ever happens here. which is why news of a homicide at the waterside apartment still seem so hard to believe. >> it is shocking for this area in particular. >> i woke up and heard shouting. i heard a man yelling. >> that is what a man remembers hearing coming from the apartment directly below are at 2:30 this morning. she went back to sleep but what about three hours later with the smell and feel of smoke. she called 911, and soon after, fairfax county firefighters were on the scene. after getting no response at the door, they forced their way inside put out the fire, and made a grim discovery. hours later investigators determined it was in fact a homicide and sideman live in the apartment. >> he seemed like a really nice guy -- and that a man lived in the apartment.

off. >> the sequestration showdown continues at the white house and congress with a last-minute plan for federal spending cuts across the board. a letter asked president obama to make good on his promise to avert the financial crisis. the sequester would drain $85 billion out of the government's budget over the next seven months. virginia would fill the heaviest burden of any state with large military assets as well as cuts to government contractors in the state. >> just in the past month, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline has jumped 13% in just 30 days. richard reid joins us from bethesda. >> it is all about location. check it out in bethesda $4.69.

light on the university of maryland student stabbed to death of her homecoming weekend. >> police searched for the man responsible. brad ellis on campus for the latest. >> a very sad day out here at the university of maryland's eastern shore. this young man was very well known and very well liked. he leaves behind a girlfriend he was eight months pregnant. >> this is edmund st. claire performing under one of his stage names. his family says he loved music and he was also a serious student, who hoped to become a surgeon. >> he does more to prove a point, like sen the message. >> he set the example of how to be a good person and everything you do. >> all those hopes and dreams

ended when he was stabbed in the chest during an altercation in the heart of campus saturday evening. his brother and cousin were with him when it happened. it was homecoming weekend. st. clare, a junior, was hoping to show his visiting family a good time. they were dropped -- they were driving across campus when a group of young men are blocking the road. there was an argument, and he dropped to the ground. police say was not random, there was an ongoing dispute. >> the self aware, labette ways we can deal with conflict in more positive ways -- look for ways to deal with conflict in more positive ways. >> the blanda dispute on pointless jealousy. -- they blame the dispute on pointless jealousy. next president of the school says campus police have beefed

up patrols. officers have been ordered to work 12 hour shifts to try to ensure security here until the culprits are caught. >> russian scientists say they have found more than 50 tiny fragments believed to be from that meeting or that exploded in the sky friday, shattering windows and injuring more than a thousand people. finding a fragment has not been an easy task, because most of it was buried in a frozen lake. residents report a 20-foot wide hole in the ice, and that could mean a large chunk of rock is submerged somewhere. >> some people were trying to sell pieces for $1,000 for small fragments. >> here we are, it is cold. >> we have had a very easy

19 in frederick, gaithersburg at 18 and the same out of washington dulles. it was 15 degrees at shannon airport in fredericksburg. has warmed up considerably, but the average high in february is now 48 degrees and we are below that. as we go through the night temperatures will fall, but overall it will build loss of the daytime heat we had. by tomorrow morning we will have possibly little precipitation. look at the current temperatures, 60 in asheville 56 in indianapolis. -- 60 n nash bill. -- 60 in nashville. through the day as the warmer

air takes over, the precipitation will be plain old- fashioned brain as we head near 50 degrees. a sharp drop in temperatures, only 21 in minneapolis right now, and that is the colder air mass that will come in here late tomorrow night and wednesday. tomorrow it will be pretty nice, near 50 degrees in the afternoon. we'll have more on the progression as we get through the news at 11:00 tonight. a little bit of a wintry mix in the morning and then we will see some rain in the afternoon. the cold front will drop temperatures late tomorrow night. as far as the timing of precipitation, through tonight a few high clouds will move into the area and temperatures will continue to fall. by 9:00 in the morning it will turn to rain before it eventually ends and moves out in the middle of the afternoon, and

>> the fire that crippled the carnival cruise ship triumph apparently started in a leak in appeal also return line. the preliminary report says the fuel line was connected to a generator. more than four thousand passengers and crew were stranded off the coast of mexico for five days last week. the ship was eventually towed to port in mobile alabama, late thursday night. the full investigation will take at least six months. >> the passenger who was accused of using a racial slur before slapping a toddler on an airline was fired from his job. >> it had to be really terrifying experience. >> the mother of a toddler said

she was just trying to calm do wn her son on board that flight, but the man accused of hitting the toddler ask that the child be quieted down, but he denies hitting that boy. 19-month-old jonah was crying on the plane due to the cabin pressure. his mother describes what happened next on that flight from minneapolis to atlanta. >> the guy looked at me, shook his head, and said [beep]. i said, are you kidding me? >> the shocking incident did not stop there. jonah's mother said her son was left with cuts and bruises on his face. >> he put his mouth to my ear and he said it again, and i had to push his face away from me, and i screamed, and it caused a commotion with other passengers. they got worried and tried to intervene.

>> new deed -- new details emerging of a harrowing escape from a fire that critically injured a 4-year-old girl. >> the search continues for what caused the fire in the first place. what is the latest? >> as you can imagine, it was a chaotic and terrifying time. a family friend tells us the mother had to jump from a window and burn her forearms and sprained her ankle in the process. edley she is out of the hospital tonight. her 4-year-old daughter remains in critical condition. the mother of the four-rowe critically injured in the fire briefly left her daughter's bedside. >> she wanted to see the damage that was done to her home, and it really is disturbing for her. >> the fire broke out early sunday morning with seven people inside the home.

on the floor of a bedroom upstairs firefighters found the little girl and responsive and performed cpr. could she is still in a medically induced coma right now. they are monitoring her brain activity because the lack of oxygen and had to revive her. >> the fire began in the basement and the arson task force is trying to figure out how and why. >> there have been no conclusions born as to exactly what happened. we are still compiling data. >> i wish i had the pictures. it looked just like this. >> stevens says he grew up in that house. there was a similar fire about 15 years ago that may have been caused by faulty wiring. >> i am sorry about the four- rowe, and i really feel for her. thank god that more people did not get hurt or killed. >> i am told that to other members of the family that were

in the hospital are out of a hospital as well tonight. they all suffered minor injuries as well. investigators say they expect to wrap up the on-site portion of the investigation as early as today. >> take a look at this video. a massive two-alarm fire in tampa, florida. firefighters worked to keep the flames away from two diesel fuel tanks. firefighters found a large pile of metal on fire when they arrived just after 4:00 this morning. >> mike cameron said he fell asleep on the couch, only to be awakened by this border collie mix, jumping on him and alerting him to the fire. he went back inside for his cats and he remembers passing out in the doorway. the dog grabbed him and pulled him away from the smoke.

>> he is staying with me forever. >> the man and his two cats escaped unharmed, as did charlie. >> what a good friend. time for a look at the day's other top stories. a man is dead after a confrontation with alexandria police. it happened on duke street. right now that area remains closed as authorities investigate. the alexandria police chief said the incident started as a domestic call. police have not released information about the victim at this time. >> what started out as a call for an apartment fire is now a homicide investigation. it happened early this morning. all woman was found dead inside an apartment with, to her upper body. >> people are feeling the pain at the gas pumps. the national average the national average is $3.73 today.

while he makes his second appearance in court tomorrow. a private service will be held for steenkamp in her home town. >> the ex-boyfriend of country singer mindy mccready says someone made a big mistake in allowing her to leave rehab. she was found dead yesterday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. the singer had threatened suicide earlier this month after losing custody of one of her sons, and she had previously attempted suicide twice before. >> news of an expanded recall from bmw. the luxury auto maker says of battery connection can fail, causing engines to stall. it includes one series to convertible since 2008 and a sports car from 2009-2011.
